To blow off a little steam, I wrote a 100 word story about how work has been going lately…here it is:

Dear Former Me,

You are about to get a technology degree.

Congratulations.

I must warn you about something important:

Soon you’ll end up with a moderately amusing but wholly unfulfilling job in the healthcare industry. On paper, your job will be described as one who customizes and implements software that will raise the bar for quality of care.

In reality, you will spend half your day sitting in an office chair and being yelled at. You will spend the other half in a radioactive room staring at ass cracks and being yelled at.

Here’s to being forewarned.

Sure, you can find some decent indexes, like this or this, but for about 6 months now, I’ve been on a never ending quest to track down First Edition copies of magazines in which Vonnegut’s original short stories were published. Surprisingly, there is not a very good index of these works in particular. This may be because so few take up this hobby.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not after the crazy-rare shit, like a copy of the Cape Cod Compass newspaper in which “The Cruise of The Jolly Roger” was published, or the Fall 2004 copy of the Backwards City Review (”Where Do You Get Your Ideas From?”) because that somehow would seem over-the-top.

I’ve even excluded book-style story collections, even if that’s the first publishing of story (like “The Big Space Fuck” in Again, Dangerous Visions.). I’ll consider Venture Traveler’s World a magazine, even though it has a hardcover, mostly because it is/was subscription based, regularly released, and a found a cherry version on ebay already.

I’ve also excluded subsequent runnings of the same story (first-runs only). “Runaways”, for example was published by The Saturday Evening Post 3 different times (April 15, ‘61 — Fall, ‘92 — Jul/Aug, ‘91). Seriously, were they that disparate? That one is bound in Bagombo Snuff Box, which Vonnegut admits to being his, uh…less distinguished works. Co-authored works (like “Dear Mr. Vonnegut” from In These Times, May 26, 2003 with Divers Hands) have also been excluded.

This is mostly a post for myself to remember the dates of the magazines I’m looking for, but also because I didn’t realize co-workers and some old friends were actually coming to my site. While I don’t think that the content they found will inspire them to return, I decided that at least one (moderately) sober post was in order. (I’m actually typing this from work). Oh, yea, check out the Humanism link. I’ve checked the logs, which reminds me; if so many people are hitting the site (several hundred downloads of each episode of the podcast, <interrobang>wtf</interrobang>) why are there so few comments? I’m not really this dull of a person!

Anyway, I made myself a little list out of what I could cobble together and pwnd teh internets. It makes searching eBay much easier (2 more ship to me today!)…more to be added as I discover them.
